  In 1854, with the political and social issues of the United States in upheaval, a group of people decided to begin a new political party. Its first convention was held in Jackson, Michigan, in July of 1854. As a result of that convention, the Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln was founded and he was nominated six years later and elected President of the United States. This is the story of what transpired in the twenty previous years to nurture the party into existence.
